Artist Biography

    IAN HANSEN

    Born in South Australia in 1948, Ian Hansen spent his childhood years nurturing a deep love of the sea and ships on the shores of Hervey Bay. Joining the navy at fifteen, Ian served for twelve years, continually painting the ships and scenes observed on his travels. On leaving the navy, Ian decided to dedicate himself full-time to painting. Sailing is still an important part of Ian’s life, and it is from these trips that he draws his inspiration and great understanding of the sea. In 2000, Ian traveled to East Timor with the Royal Australian Navy to paint scenes of the navy’s involvement during the country’s crisis. Ian is a Fellow of the Royal Art Society (NSW) and the Australian Society of Marine Artists. He exhibits with the Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport as one of its “premier artists,” a distinction given only to twenty artists worldwide. He also exhibits with the Kendall Gallery on the Isle of Wight and various galleries in Sydney. Ian’s work hangs in the Government House, Qantas House, Sydney Stock Exchange, AMP Building, National Maritime Museum and many private collections across the globe. Since 1961, Ian’s work has won several awards, including the Maritime Gallery’s Thomas Wells Award for “The Tweed,” and the 2005 International Marine Art Exhibition’s Award of Excellence.
